MOUNTAIN CITY, Ga. - AT a little before 7:30 on a recent Saturday night, the street outside the main gate of Camp Blue Ridge began to resemble a livestock holding pen. A herd of parents, a strange breed dressed in polo shirts, sandals and khaki shorts, waited for the gates to open. A lone father considered how to break the news that his son's grandfather had passed away. A mother from Florida wiped away tears as she waited to see her daughter for the first time in four weeks.

Summer camps cope with parents' spending cuts
Joey Waldman and his wife, Lori, run a traditional overnight camp in Georgia. Blue Ridge Camp in Mountain City, about two hours northeast of Atlanta, has been around for 31 years. Waldman's parents operated a camp in Florida before that, so he grew up in the business.

Blue Ridge Camp in Mountain City, about “Every parent wants to hear from their child,” said Lori Waldman, co-director of the camp founded 42 years ago by her husband Joey’s parents. “A lot of them who were campers here themselves tell us about the letters they wrote home, that their parents kept.”
