Making the decision to send your son or daughter to Camp Blue Ridge this summer can be one of the best choices you could make. At our summer camp near Alabama, we provide children with a summer filled with fun, while they also learn important life skills that they can’t get anywhere else. Campers will spend time outdoors, build their confidence, and make memories that will last a lifetime at Camp Blue Ridge! Attending summer camp is tons of fun, but the weeks leading up to it tend to be filled with anxiety and stress for both parents and children. Continue reading to learn some of our tips to have a great summer at camp this year! Before Camp: As camp gets closer and closer, your children may shy away from the idea of leaving. Going to summer camp for the first time, (and even returning), and not being in the comfort of family and friends is a scary thought. Ask your son or daughter of any concerns they might have about going away to summer camp. Maintain a positive attitude and avoid any conversations that may show summer camp in a negative light. Remind them that they will fall in to a typical summer camp schedule right away and will have so much fun that they won’t have time to miss home! While at Camp: Most summer camps don’t allow cell phones or phone calls, so writing letters is the next best option! Send your child to summer camp with preaddressed and pre-stamped envelopes. Ask them specific questions about any summer camp activities they might be participating in, friends that theyre making, and any other positive things that happen. It is alright to tell your son or daughter that you miss them, but steer clear of comments such as “the cat really misses you,” or “The house is so sad without you…”, etc. This will make your child feel bad about leaving home. If your child writes back saying that they want to come home, don’t worry. This is completely normal and everyone adjusts to summer camp at a different rate. Remind them that you know they will be able to get through it and have a great time, also that they will be home before they know it! If you have any concerns or questions, reach out to the summer camp staff. They are trained and experienced to deal with these kind of situations and will likely be able to improve the situation.
